Quantum Random Number Generator Industry Research Report
QRNG is an important source of hardware for solving problems related to random numbers (such as cryptographic solutions). QRNG is a novel solution for generating random numbers that has emerged with the development of quantum physics technology. QRNG uses the inherent unpredictability of quantum mechanics to build hardware (such as chips).
Classical RNGs (CRNG) and Quantum RNGs (QRNG) are also called True RNGs (TRNG). Compared with CRNGs, QRNGs pull their random numbers (in other words, QRNG is unpredictable) from inherently indeterministic quantum processes. The inability to predict the numbers is not just based on complexity but it is in principle impossible to predict random numbers that are produced by QRNGs.
Due to the characteristics of QRNG, it may have higher resistance against attacks. Therefore, with the advent of the era of quantum information, QRNG will gradually replace existing random numbers to varying degrees. Although CRNGs can currently meet most application needs, they may not be able to provide higher security as new technologies emerge. When the cost of using QRNG drops to a level where it can be replaced or applied on a large scale, it will experience explosive growth during this period. Especially in the 5G/6G era, a large number of mobile devices can use QRNG to increase security. At present, the main application scenarios are for situations that require high security but are not sensitive to cost and scale, mainly for exploratory experiments. With the iteration and upgrading of QRNG, the product is expected to enter the lives of individual consumers on a large scale in recent years.
For example, QRNG may appear on a large scale in mobile phones, bank U-disks, unmanned driving (drones, unmanned ships, unmanned vehicles), internet-connected cars, and other IoT products. This means that the development of QRNG products is mainly in the form of chips, which are small in size, fast in speed, more reliable, and more economical.
QRNG is a research and application field recognized and supported by governments. For example, the UK's AQURAND project and the EU's QRANGE project, which are joint industrial collaborations led by national units and primarily supported by national funds.
Currently, the gambling industry is one of the downstream markets for QRNG. This is because hackers successfully made millions of dollars by locking and invading slot machines in 2014, causing losses to casinos in the United States, Romania, and Macau. Casinos in the United States and Macau have used QRNG to provide a fair environment for participants in games.
Entropy as a Service (EaaS):
- Entropy as a Service (EaaS) and quantum random number generators (QRNGs) are closely related, as QRNGs are one of the primary sources of entropy used to generate random numbers in EaaS systems.
- Entropy as a Service (EaaS) is a type of cloud-based service that provides access to high-quality random numbers, also known as entropy, for use in cryptographic applications. EaaS providers typically use quantum random number generators or other sources of high-entropy data to generate truly random numbers that are highly secure and difficult to predict.
- The main benefit of EaaS is that it provides a convenient and cost-effective way to obtain high-quality random numbers for cryptographic applications, without the need for organizations to invest in expensive hardware or software. EaaS providers typically offer APIs or web services that allow developers to easily integrate random number generation into their applications, while also providing security and reliability guarantees.
- EaaS is particularly useful for applications that require high-quality and secure random numbers, such as cryptography, key generation, simulations, and gaming. It is also becoming increasingly important in the age of quantum computing, as traditional random number generators may be vulnerable to attacks by quantum computers.
