Automotive LiDAR Market Research Report for 2022 H1
This report aims to evaluate the market of Automotive LiDAR, the scope of study covers the passenger vehicles’ LiDAR only. Based on different functionalities and geography, ICV segmented the automotive LiDAR market, then counted the market size for the first half of 2022 and forecasted for next five years. Additionally, ICV also performed the study about core technologies of automotive LiDAR and the market analysis.
Compared to another three types of perception hardware (camera, ultrasonic radar, and MMW radar), the automotive LiDAR has much better performance in terms of recognition accuracy, anti-interference, and range of detection, though it’s the “new blood” of the family of automation-driving sensor. ICV pointed out that, being equipped with LiDAR could be thought as one of significant signs to show the capabilities of L3 automation driving. Based on how they work, the LiDAR can be roughly classified into mechanical, hybrid-solid state, and fully solid state. The mechanical LiDAR is costly and unable to ensure the safety, therefore, they are often used as industrial LiDAR, instead of automotive LiDAR.
The automotive LiDAR can be further classified into main LiDAR and blind-spot LiDAR. The main LiDAR is able to “see” further and has wider horizontal field of view (FOV), scanning the areas in front of the vehicle. The blind-spot LiDAR usually locates on the side of the vehicle, they are near-range LiDAR. The wider vertical field of view allows the blind-spot LiDAR covering the blind spots of vehicle, which improves much of the driving safety.
In the first half of 2022, the global automotive LiDAR market exceeded $350 million. ICV estimated that the global market of automotive LiDAR will be worth $2.86 billion in 2023 and still dominated by main LiDAR. With blind-spot LiDAR was estimated to be mass-produced in 2024, the whole market was expected to reach $17.34 billion in 2027. ICV’s analysts believed that the solutions which contain one main LiDAR and several blind-spot LiDARs would be a great choice, for vehicles with higher level of automation, in five years.
Chinese market and European market took more than 75% of the global market shares in the first half of 2022. China ranked first with the sales of $149.5 million, followed by the Europe which got sales of $124.5 million. Overall, as the “New Star” of ADAS sensors, the growth of automotive LiDAR is expanding at a CAGR of 43.4% over next five years, which is much higher than other three types of sensors.
As mentioned previously, automotive grade LiDAR includes hybrid-solid state and fully solid state. The hybrid-solid state LiDAR generally is used as the main LiDAR, because of its higher angular resolution, adopting the technologies named rotating mirror and MEMS mirror. The flash technology and optical phased array technology are adopted by the fully solid-state LiDAR. The flash LiDAR has been launched by several LiDAR manufactures in 2022, however, OPA LiDAR has no final product yet. The flash LiDAR has lower costs than hybrid-solid state LiDAR, while sacrifices some of resolution and detection range, therefore, it fits better as the near-range blind-spot LiDAR.

About 89% of hybrid solid LiDAR sold in first half of 2022 adopted rotating mirror technology, ICV’s analysts predicted that the rotating mirror would still be the mainstream in the future.
