Beijing Quantum Institute Chief Scientist Yuan Zhiliang Elected Fellow of Optical Society of America
On November 8, 2022, the Optical Society of America announced the names of 109 new Fellows for 2023. Yuan Zhiliang, chief scientist of the Institute of Quantum Information Science (IQIS) in Beijing, was elected for his "outstanding and sustained contributions to the field of quantum classified communications.

Zhiliang Yuan returned to China to join the Quantum Institute full-time in April 2021, leading the optical quantum communication and device team in the research and development of core technologies and key devices for quantum communication, proposing and realizing the world's first dual-field quantum key distribution technology without optical frequency heterogeneous transmission, and realizing a new 600km dual-field quantum key distribution system.
Yuan Zhiliang has been devoted to the research of high-speed fiber optic quantum key system for a long time, and has demonstrated the world's first 100km (2003), the first megabit (2008), the first ten megabits and the first breakthrough 600km (2020) quantum key distribution system. Other representative achievements include the first demonstration of single-photon light-emitting diodes (2001), self-differential single-photon detectors (2006), light sources for direct phase modulation quantum communication (2015) and quantum key two-field protocols (2017). The related research results have been published in more than 130 papers in internationally recognized journals such as Nature, Nature Photonics and Science.
About Optical Society of America.
Optica, formerly known as the Optical Society of America (OSA), was founded in 1916 and is the world's leading international academic organization in the field of optics, with members in more than 180 countries and regions. Optica Fellow is the highest academic honor bestowed by Optica on experts in the field. The selection process is very strict, with 3-5 current Optica Fellows being recommended by the Optica Fellow Members Committee, and then recommended to the Board of Directors for review. The 109 elected Fellows come from 24 countries
