The winners of the 2022 Dharma Academy Orange Award were announced. 15 young Chinese scientists were awarded millions of dollars and will receive comprehensive research support from Alibaba. The average age of these young scientists is only 33 years old, and 60% of them are from basic disciplines, all of them have already taken the lead in major scientific research.

As a representative of the field of quantum science, Chen Mingcheng, who is 90 years old, was successfully selected. Speaking of Chen Mingcheng, you may be unfamiliar; but mention his mentor Pan Jianwei and Lu Chaoyang, the Chinese scientific community should not be many people do not know; and mention his achievements, more people know. He is the co-author of the "nine chapters" of the experimental paper on the superiority of quantum computing.

The award was given for his work in exploring the fundamental problems of quantum mechanics and helping China to realize the "superiority of quantum computing".

01Contributing to the "superiority of quantum computing" in China

Mingcheng Chen is a research associate at the National Research Center for Microscale Matter Science in Hefei, China. He has a strong interest in fundamental problems of quantum mechanics and scalable quantum computing. On the fundamental side, he and his colleagues have experimentally demonstrated that imaginary numbers are not "imaginary" and natural numbers are not "natural" in the quantum world through high-precision quantum modulation techniques, as a parallel to the paper [1], the first experimental exclusion of the standard quantum mechanics in the form of real numbers; on the In the application area, he designed the framework of quantum sampling line and verification algorithm, which helped China to achieve the milestone of "quantum computing superiority" by surpassing supercomputers in solving specific tasks in both optical and superconducting quantum computing systems. He is the co-author of the "Quantum Computing Superiority" experiment in Chapter 9 [2], and one of the authors of the "Quantum Computing Superiority" experiment in Zuchongzhi II [3].

Up to now, Mingcheng Chen has published two articles in Science, one article in Nature, one article in Nature Nanotechnology, one article in Nature Physics, two articles in Nature Photonics, two articles in PNAS, and 25 articles in Physical Review Letters (PNAS). ). His papers have been cited 7000 times.

In terms of honors, Mingcheng Chen was awarded the 2016 China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the 2017 CAS President's Award, and the 2021 National May Fourth Youth Medal Collective by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League; he was selected for the 2017 National Postdoctoral Innovation Talent Support Program, the 2019 Forbes China 30 Under 30 Elite List, the 2020 Zhongying Scholar, 2022 CSU Enlightened Star Scholar.

02Post-90s scholar under the tutelage of Lu Chaoyang and Pan Jianwei

Mingcheng Chen, born in 1990, graduated from Fujian Zhangpu No. 1 High School in 2008, received his bachelor's degree in physics from Xiamen University in 2012, joined the quantum research team of University of Science and Technology of China in the same year, and studied for his PhD in physics as a student of Prof. Lu Chaoyang from 2012 to 2017. After his Ph.D., he joined the National Research Center for Microscale Matter Science in Hefei as a postdoctoral researcher under the supervision of Academician Jianwei Pan. since 2019, he has been an associate researcher at the National Research Center for Microscale Matter since then.

According to the report of CCTV[4], through self-declaration, recommendation by others and active search, 2022 Green Orange Award received nearly 500 valid declarations from 135 universities and institutes nationwide, and was recommended by nearly 200 academicians, 19 university presidents and 2 Nobel Prize winners.

In the recommendation letter to Chen Mingcheng, Professor Lu Chaoyang highly praised: "He is not only outstanding in physical depth, breadth and intuition, but he is also the most classical real scholar: intoxicated with academics, low-key and transcendent, childish and wise, and willing to help others. Chen Mingcheng is one of the most typical representatives of the group of young people whom I often thank at the end of my academic reports for their 'chivalrous youth, the sky is full of stars' and 'extraordinary and extraordinary'.
