Free! World Bank Launches Quantum Computing Training Course

On August 25, the nonprofit Linux Foundation, in partnership with the World Bank, released [1] a new free online training course, Fundamentals of Quantum Computing [2]. The course provides an overview of how quantum computing can be used for complex decisions far beyond current computing capabilities; and, the expected impact on technology, government and industry as quantum technology further matures.

Quantum computing involves the use of quantum theory to perform complex computations. The technology has been in development for decades and is expected to revolutionize classical computing as quantum computing becomes more widespread.

Since 2014, the Linux Foundation [3] has been providing online training and education and offers a complete catalog of courses in more than a dozen categories, including more than 100 courses, to meet the growing global demand. Meanwhile, the World Bank Group's Open Learning Campus (OLC) accelerates development solutions by translating global knowledge theory into operational learning. Since its inception in 2015, it has delivered 5,000 learning products to more than 4 million customers in 190 countries. This contributes to the World Bank Group's twin goals of "eradicating poverty and sharing prosperity.

"Quantum computing has the potential to impact a wide range of sectors, including financial services, healthcare, agriculture and logistics, in addition to changing the way we build cybersecurity. Given its potential impact, it is important to spread the basics in the development of this new technology and understand its implications for our skills, systems and technology governance," said Sheila Jagannathan, director of the World Bank OLC, "As the WBG helps government chief information officers, government technology teams, advisors and policymakers to consider, and prepare for, the digital transformation of emerging economies, we have developed this Quantum Computing Basics course in partnership with the Linux Foundation. This is part of a broader initiative to enable advanced digital partners to learn about the current/future impact of emerging technologies."

The new course takes approximately three hours to complete and can be accessed by anyone. In particular, public sector leaders, chief information officers (CIOs) and technical teams responsible for the planning, design, development and deployment of infrastructure and platforms for public service delivery and the digital economy. Learners should typically be familiar with the capabilities of computers, as well as the current use of on-premise and cloud computing.

The course discusses the fundamentals of quantum computing, highlighting the potential technological disruption it brings. It discusses the current capabilities, current use cases, and future applications of quantum computing; while highlighting the security benefits and dangers, particularly with respect to secure communications and encryption. It also dispels some of the "myths" surrounding quantum computing, explaining what it currently is and why it is an exciting and necessary technology to understand and embrace.

"As quantum computing technology matures, we are on the cusp of another technological revolution that will allow us to solve problems that are too computationally intensive for traditional computers." It's time to start educating people around the world about quantum computing to ensure that policy development is well thought out and that the necessary talent pool has been cultivated to support the development of this technology," said Clyde Seepersad, senior vice president and general manager of training and certification at the Linux Foundation. The World Bank has proven to be a valuable partner in this effort, and recognizing this need, we will take a leadership role in ensuring that everyone has access to quantum computing educational resources."

Free registration for Foundations of Quantum Computing is available immediately. The course can be accessed on the World Bank Group's OLC and Linux Foundation training platforms.
