IBM Quantum Educator Summit to be held online on August 3

The second annual IBM Quantum Educator Summit (Educator Summit) will be held online on August 3, 2022 EST. Registration is also available for domestic IPs.

The Educator Summit will introduce educators to the learning tools and resources offered by IBM Quantum and guide them in preparing their students to use them. The summit will also include networking sessions and panel discussions and will highlight educators who will share their experiences in teaching quantum computing and providing quantum devices to their students.

Creating a suite of educational initiatives has been a core goal of IBM Quantum since it first provided access to real quantum devices in 2016. These initiatives aim to create a diverse and inclusive workforce that will take quantum computing from a graduate course at some universities to a general education course. Today, anyone who is a teacher, professor, student or curious about it can learn about quantum computing through educational materials developed by IBM Quantum, and then run quantum algorithms and protocols on the devices - all for free.

Education in quantum computing has been provided to more than 3 million people through IBM's digital learning channels and in partnership with organizations including The Coding School, IBM Quantum HBCU centers, and educators teaching approximately 340 courses at institutions in more than 120 countries.

In 2021, IBM Quantum and The Coding School are partnering to provide a year-long introduction to quantum computing to more than 10,000 students in high school and beyond. The summit will feature quantum course leaders, programmers and course graduates from The Coding School.

This year alone, the IBM Quantum Internship Program will provide intensive training to 135 interns. In total, these initiatives have invested more than $100 million over the past five years to support open quantum computing education. IBM aims to work with more people to replicate such programs in the emerging quantum industry.

No experience with Qiskit (IBM's open source quantum computing software development kit) is required to attend the summit. introductory sessions will enable educators to bring Qiskit into their classrooms and curricula, providing their students with hands-on experience with quantum computers. Attendees will also learn about new educational resources being developed by IBM Quantum, hear from other educators who have brought Qiskit into their curriculum, and have the opportunity to network, ask questions, and share their experiences with each other.

The next phase of the BM Quantum education program will be led by Dr. John Watrous, faculty member and interim executive director of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Thomas Wong, assistant professor at Creighton University and quantum liaison to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, will serve as this year's keynote speaker.
