Forbes Quantum key distribution is a great opportunity for U.S. telecom providers
John Prisco, CEO and founder of Safe Quantum Inc., has written a series for Forbes about quantum security and the importance of deploying quantum security technology for telecom providers. Photon Box concludes his discussion on communication.

John Prisco
Prisco explained that any organizational data involves three main players: the organization, the data center, and the telecommunications provider that provides the fiber-optic network. So, for telecommunications suppliers, "What is the responsibility of the U.S. telecommunications company that supplies the fiber optic cable?"
U.S. telcos are catching up with each other, while European and Chinese telcos have surpassed this stage. In fact, BT, consulting giant Ernst & Young and Toshiba recently announced a commercial quantum security trial network linking Ernst & Young's London site . What technology do they use? Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).

QKD technology over a fiber-optic network shares a randomly generated "key" and is only accessible to the sender and intended recipient. We look forward to seeing QKD exploration, proof-of-concept trials or testbeds in 2022. Telecom providers looking into QKD technology can also work to explore other benefits, such as:
First mover advantage. Winner takes all, loser for Kou. Telcos stepping up today to create quantum-protected networks will be able to provide customers with early security opportunities.
Quantum experience. Quantum technology is advancing rapidly, and pioneers will have a greater understanding of all aspects of the quantum field, especially hardware.
Embedded talent. Finding and attracting quantum professionals is extremely difficult, arguably more difficult than any other field of technology. Now is the time to build a team to research, deploy and learn about commercial quantum implementations.
Commercial testbed. Like BT, US telcos can seize the opportunity to build small networks geographically, such as in Silicon Valley or Boston; or by industry sector, such as offering financial services in New York City.
While the U.S. may not really be at risk of falling behind, the winners in the U.S. fiber and data center market will be early adopters. QKD presents a major opportunity to advance quantum solutions and be part of the coming quantum wave.
