Taiwan: Establish a quantum technology industry chain in 2030

As early as December 2020, Taiwan, China announced the launch of the "Quantum Taiwan" plan, starting from 2022 to build a quantum "national team" with a five-year fund of NT$8 billion (about 1.8 billion yuan). On March 16, the quantum "national team" was officially established in Taipei, and the list of its 17 research teams was officially released. The two major goals are to build a quantum computer and quantum communication network system independently developed by Taiwan, and strive to establish Taiwan's quantum technology industrial chain by 2030.

At yesterday's press conference, 17 quantum R&D teams were officially assembled, including 72 interdisciplinary experts and scholars, and 24 companies. The research and development direction will focus on projects such as quantum components, quantum computers, quantum algorithms, and quantum communication. Industrial partners include well-known Taiwanese companies such as Hon Hai and MediaTek.

The CEO of the Quantum System Promotion Group and Professor Zhang Wenhao of the Department of Electronic Physics of Yangming Jiaotong University said that the research and development content of the 17 industry-university-research teams can be divided into three categories, namely:

1. General quantum computer hardware technology: 7 plans, 29 hosts, 12 industry participation; related to chip factories, circuit factories, and packaging factories.

2. Optical quantum technology: 4 programs, 22 moderators, 8 industry participation; related to photoelectric power plants, telecommunications companies, packaging plants, and defense industries.

3. Quantum software technology and application development: 6 plans, 21 moderators, 4 industry participation; related to software vendors, network vendors, pharmaceutical manufacturers, financial industry, and logistics industry.

Research program topics include:

1. General quantum computer hardware technology: construction of scalable superconducting quantum computers, research and development of superconducting parameter amplifiers, high coherence superconducting quantum circuit materials, silicon-based quantum dot quantum computing, CMOS integrated germanium qubits, DC in low-temperature CMOS components /RF SPICE model, quantum computing and simulation with neutral atoms.

2. Optical quantum technology: multifunctional quantum communication network, optical quantum chip applied to integrated multi-channel quantum random number generator, non-Gaussian continuous variable integrated optoelectronic chip quantum computing, quantum key development key in wavelength division multiplexing optical fiber quantum communication network Component and system integration research and development.

3. Quantum software technology and application development: theoretical development of quantum computer science, quantum virtual machine, quantum program verification and conversion, quantum computing optimization and financial application, quantum noise algorithm for chemical system quantum simulation, quantum error correction design.

In the next few years, 17 teams will conduct breakthrough research and development in response to today's quantum technology bottlenecks, hoping to develop Taiwan's unique quantum technology software and hardware industry key core technologies. In the short term, post-quantum cryptography technology can rapidly improve Taiwan's information security protection security level; in the medium term The result is the construction of a metro-scale network that can achieve absolute information security communication level; in the long run, Taiwan can master key technologies such as parametric amplifiers and low-temperature circuits, and Taiwan's semiconductor process, IC design and packaging technology will become a major boost.

Guo Shangzhi, the convener of the quantum system promotion group and a professor at Taiwan's Tsinghua University, said that Taiwan does not focus on the number of quantum computer bits and scale competition, but hopes to create the greatest business opportunities through industry-academia cooperation and will focus on core technologies. , cryptographic research and development platform, industrial exchange, talent cultivation, core facilities and other fields.
