McKinsey: Quantum computing is one of the technologies to watch in 2022
Recently, McKinsey invited 12 KOLs from academia, industry and within McKinsey to share their views on technology trends in 2022 and released a report. According to the report, they identified artificial intelligence, the metaverse, encryption and quantum computing as some of the key business priorities for 2022.

We have excerpted what these KOLs have to say about quantum computing:
1. Alan Baratz, President and CEO, D-Wave Systems

What technology trends do you predict will headline the business agenda for the rest of 2022? Why?
Over the past two-plus years, we have all experienced significant and rapid changes brought about by the pandemic. This is the year we move from being disrupted to managing disruption. Whether it's restoring our supply chains or opening up new ways of working, great businesses will start finding and adopting new solutions, technological or otherwise, to revolutionary and transformative problems. As with every market transition, emerging technologies such as quantum computing will be required to solve complex operational problems and achieve transformative outcomes.
Which technology trends do you think are on the radar of companies and deserve more attention from executives?
We've seen more and more businesses interested in quantum computing, but there are still many who don't know how quantum can fundamentally change their business. In any given industry—from manufacturing and logistics to bioscience and pharmaceuticals—quantum computing can improve operational efficiency, increase revenue, and give companies an edge over their competitors.
2. Julie Love, Partner and Product Lead, Quantum Computing, Microsoft

What technology trends do you predict will headline the business agenda for the rest of 2022? Why?
In 2022, we will continue to see steady progress in quantum computing. The commercial impact of quantum hardware is still years away, but I expect next year to bring improvements in the basic materials and hardware used to build quantum systems, advances in cloud capabilities for programming quantum systems through platforms provided by cloud providers, and quantum technology The impact of branching, for example, using quantum computing-inspired algorithms to solve difficult computational problems.
Which technology trends do you think are on the radar of companies and deserve more attention from executives?
Quantum computing promises to provide unprecedented solutions to some of society's most complex challenges. For example, it is possible to help combat climate change by designing new efficient carbon sequestration catalysts. While significant progress is required to achieve real industry-scale impact, companies can now begin to understand quantum application areas in the cloud or with partners. Harvesting ideas from quantum thinking and innovation, there are also opportunities for disruptive innovation. By reimagining classical algorithms based on quantum concepts, we have improved capacity management in cloud storage, made advances in medical imaging, and reimagined freight optimization.
What advice would you give business leaders as they consider incorporating new technology into their business?
Businesses that can leverage quantum computing to accelerate critical workloads will have the opportunity to bring disruptive innovation to their industries. The key to making this happen will be learning to work in a heterogeneous computing fabric, not only using quantum, but also machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc.
It's also important to separate hype from reality. Quantum computing will have a profound impact on the global economy, such as the design of predictive computing in the fields of chemistry and materials. However, this will require tight integration with high-performance classical computing solutions and new ways of thinking and programming.
3. Jeremy O'Brien, CEO and co-founder of PsiQuantum

What technology trends do you predict will headline the business agenda for the rest of 2022? Why?
I expect 2022 to be the year that more and more businesses begin to seriously prepare for emerging technologies that have the potential to revolutionize their industries. Given the rapid pace of innovation, business leaders will prepare their companies to leverage these powerful technologies to address some of the most pressing practical challenges, and in doing so, create a unique and significant competitive advantage.
Which technology trends do you think are on the radar of companies and deserve more attention from executives?
More and more companies are facing physical and chemical constraints (e.g., battery design, drug design, and materials), accelerated by increasingly scarce resources, the global push for sustainable development, and the shift to low-carbon technologies. limit. We believe quantum computing is essential to help overcome these challenges. Multinational companies across industries have begun to prepare for the inevitable availability of quantum computing and assess how to harness this new computing power for lasting competitive advantage. As quantum technology achieves milestones this year, I expect forward-thinking executives to invest more time and money in getting the technology ready.
What advice would you give business leaders as they consider incorporating new technology into their business?
Businesses should consider partnering with emerging technology companies to determine business readiness and the magnitude of the impact. In the case of quantum computing, this means evaluating the most impactful use cases, developing algorithms, assessing the potential impact on businesses and industries, and investing early in technology infrastructure, institutional knowledge and in-house expertise.
Companies should start preparing now to secure access to what may be an extremely limited supply of quantum computing. Given the breakthroughs quantum computing will bring, these early adopters may find themselves in a winner-take-all market leadership position.
4. Rodney Zemmel, Senior Partner, McKinsey & Company

Which technology trends do you think are on the radar of companies and deserve more attention from executives?
Quantum computing and the quantum internet. It's often easy to overlook technologies that may not be available a decade from now, but if their potential is properly harnessed, their impact can be a game-changer.
While quantum computing doesn't make sense for every company, we see a wide range of potential applications, from biopharmaceuticals to automotive, chemical and, of course, telecommunications and financial services. If you are in these industries and you have a long-term view, you need to have a team in your company that understands it.
