2024 The Global Future Industry Index

The Global Future Industry Index, a research initiative by ICV TA&K with support from WIPO, OECD, and IRENA, evaluates the capabilities of over 20 countries and regions in future industries. This study, based on secondary research, data collection, and expert interviews in biotechnology, green energy, and advanced information technologies, assesses industry layout, development, innovation investment, and sustainability.

Future industries, in this context, are defined as forward-looking and strategically significant sectors involving technology, innovation, and societal advancement. Our research focuses on key domains such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, green energy, humanoid robotics, high-performance computing, quantum information, neuroscience and neuromorphic intelligence, and advanced communications. The development of these fields significantly shapes industrial structures, employment dynamics, and global competitiveness.

The Global Future Industry Institute (GFII) has identified 20 countries that stand out in terms of technological innovation strength and future industrial development potential. The institute evaluates candidate countries across five dimensions: Innovation Ecosystem and Technological CapabilityIndustry Diversity and Emerging IndustriesSustainability and EnvironmentTalent and EducationInternational Collaboration and Adaptability to Trends. The U.S. and China have topped the rankings for three years. In 2024, Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden moved up, while South Korea and others dropped. Switzerland leads in talent, Denmark in sustainability.

The city's future prospects ranking considers factors like Quantum Technology, Deep Space, Low - altitude and Deep Sea, AI, Clean Energy, Embodied Intelligence, Neuroscience and Neuromorphic Intelligence, Advanced Connectivity, and Biotechnology. It objectively reflects a city or metropolitan area's overall strength in these future industries.

San Francisco - San Jose topped the overall ranking again in 2024, as it did in 2023. With top research institutions and a large number of innovative tech talents, it leads in AI, Clean Energy, Neuroscience and Neuromorphic Intelligence, and Biotechnology. But it's relatively weak in Deep Space, Low - Altitude and Deep Sea, and Embodied Intelligence.

Many other cities also have strong tech innovation. Beijing is excellent in advanced joining technologies. New York performs well in quantum technology, deep - space and deep - sea exploration, and biotechnology.

In this ranking, the US and China have the most cities (five each), and Germany has two, giving it a competitive edge.
